Save the Children Supporting Washington Families Hardest Hit by Atmospheric River's Heavy Rains, Flooding
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Dec. 12, 2025) — Coastal and river waters are inundating communities across western Washington this week, due to relentless heavy rains. Save the Children is working swiftly to meet the most urgent needs of children and families hardest hit by the destructive flooding, including in the Skagit Valley, where over 100,000 people are under evacuation orders.
In coordination with state and local partners, Save the Children is partnering with the American Red Cross to provide emergency assistance to evacuated families. In addition, Save the Children is distributing diapers, baby wipes, and other child-focused supplies to families in need. Save the Children is also assessing impacted childcare centers and working to provide financial, material, and technical support to help them reopen, get children back to learning, and support families.
"Families in western Washington are facing devastating losses as severe flooding uproots lives and damages homes and communities," Amee Barlet, Save the Children's Washington State Director, said. "Children are always among the most vulnerable in disasters like this. They urgently need access to essential supplies and emotional support — and Save the Children is committed to helping them recover, heal and regain a sense of normalcy."
Save the Children has been helping America's children recover from major disasters since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, including this year’s catastrophic wildfires in California and destructive tornadoes in Kentucky. Save the Children has also been working in Washington state since 2008 – leading early education programs in some of the most impoverished rural communities.
By contributing to the Children's Emergency Fund, you can help Save the Children protect kids in the United States when disasters like flooding in Washington strike.
