Thomas Murphy
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Thomas S. Murphy.
Thomas S. Murphy served as Chairman of Save the Children’s Board of Trustees from 1998-2005 and was a member of the Board from 2007-2013. In 2013 he was named Chair Emeritus of the Board.
An internationally respected figure in business and philanthropy, Mr. Murphy’s four-decade tenure at Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., began in 1954 when he joined the television and radio broadcasting company in its very first year. He was named Chairman and CEO in 1966, he directed the company’s rise to prominence in broadcast and publications. He served as Chairman and CEO until 1990 before resuming the title in 1994. He retired in 1996 when Capital Cities/ ABC, Inc. merged with The Walt Disney Company. Mr. Murphy currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. and NYU Langone Health.
Mr. Murphy received a BSME degree from Cornell University in 1945 and an MBA degree from the Graduate School of Business Administration, Harvard University, in 1949. He is a veteran of World War II.
